How it all started

The Maritime Montering Norinco India Pvt. Ltd. (MARINOR) story started in India in 2010 with a partnership between the Maritime Montering AS (Marinacc), Norway and Norinco India Pvt. Ltd.

In India, shipyards build their own accommodation in the vessels they build. However, in the West, shipyards usually outsource the entire accommodation section of the vessel to a specialist. In 2009, Indian shipyards (especially Cochin Shipyard) started receiving a high volume of orders to build vessels for foreign ship owners. And these owners wanted world-class accommodation onboard their vessels, of course!

Seeing this gap in the Indian market, we approached Maritime Montering AS (Marinacc), Norway (one of the leading turnkey accommodation companies in the world for commercial vessels and offshore installations) and entered into a JV with them.

Prior to its formation, the marine accommodation field was a proliferation of small players who did piece-meal jobs for various shipyards. The prompt and timely entry of MARINOR into this field changed the entire landscape, by providing a one-stop professional solution in India

What problems were we solving?

The accommodation section of a vessel constitutes anywhere between 10–15% of the cost of building a vessel. But it probably makes up for 40% of the headache. This is because the work happens in very confined spaces and as per an extremely strict time schedule. Multiple jobs happening simultaneously, both inside and outside the vessel, while it’s being built. Hence, the dire need for a specialist. After all, good quality interiors that can stand the test of time greatly increase the perceived value of a vessel.

Since its inception in 2010, MARINOR has helped Indian shipyards address these issues by providing the best interiors in the country that are at par with the best in the world.

MARINOR is an ideal example of an emerging company with robust work practices that are built on Norwegian ethics & Indian determination.

What role did we play in the partnership?

Apart from being a 49% partner financially, we also carried out all the essential duties required to start a business, on behalf of the JV. After that, in consultation with our new partners — Maritime Montering, we further contributed by:

  1. Acquiring suitable office spaces for the new team
  2. Recruiting the right management and engineering teams
  3. Handling all legal and tax related issues
  4. Performing all the marketing for the company at various shipyards and with numerous shipowners in India
  5. Handling a lot of Union related issues at the yards

We had our fair share of hiccups and teething problems initially, but with the right teamwork and technical assistance from our partners in Norway, we achieved everything we’d set out to achieve.

A few things we’re proud of:

  • Team Strength — 160
  • Number of vessels completed since inception — 20 (which includes the prestigious contract of India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier which is being built at Cochin Shipyard).

Staying true to our ever-lasting commitment of providing holistic solutions to partners, customers and stakeholders alike, we at Norinco did everything necessary to see this project through from ideation to execution and action. We saw a challenge and provided world class solutions on the back of robust and ethical practises to get the job done. Something we strive to do in each of our endeavours.
